By Amelia, Gilda’s Club Wisconsin 100+ Hours Volunteer
Hello, my name is Amelia and I have had the opportunity to volunteer as a greeter with Gilda’s Club for over the last two years! I first started my volunteering journey with Gilda’s Club after graduating college and starting my full-time job as a CNA at the local hospital.
Through my work as a CNA, I’ve been present during patients receiving cancer diagnoses, and while my role was deeply rewarding, I recognized the therapeutic limits in my role for support after they walked out of the hospital doors.

Creating a Circle of Support
That’s why I sought out a volunteer opportunity with Gilda’s Club, it has allowed me to be part of a more complete support system. It feels like a full-circle extension of the support I am able to provide.
My greeter position on Wednesday mornings has been so special to me, especially on the Men’s Brunch days! Over coffee and delicious egg bakes, I have been able to witness the impact and support that community brings. Being in the presence of a space that brings comfortability in vulnerability has been so meaningful to me. I have really come to appreciate not only the connections I’ve developed in Men’s Brunch, but also the importance of having spaces like these; especially for people who don’t always feel they can be vulnerable in day-to-day life, even more so considering cancer diagnoses.
More Than Just Bagels
These experiences have become the highlight of my time volunteering here. Who knew brunch could mean so much more than some excellent bagels?
As I now continue on my path and further my education in PA school, all of these experiences have reinforced the kind of provider I hope to become. I am excited to carry forward the importance of listening, creating space for vulnerability, and supporting the broader emotional journey of patients in a way that goes beyond the clinical setting. My time volunteering has been such a gift that I can’t wait to pay it forward.
